Embodied and Operational Decarbonization Trade-Offs in the Building Envelope | 10/12/2023 - 10:30am | BuildingEnergy NYC 2023 |
As Managing Director at Thébaud LLC, Kiko leads a research-driven practice that is centered on bio-sourced materials, biophilic design principles, and just transition for both on- and off-site project types that lock in carbon within the built fabric and structure. Having backed ourselves into a corner, human-induced climate in peril requires us to act quickly and decisively to have the possibility of a carbon-free future. We have made recent strides with advancements in reducing operational carbon and increasing our renewable energy capacities towards decarbonizing our grid. Embodied carbon is a significant area of opportunity that can impact the life cycle analysis of both existing and new buildings. Given the time value of carbon, it behooves us to understand that unborn carbon flux today is more precious than the unborn carbon flux of tomorrow.
Kiko was a primary proponent for the successful incorporation of Hemp-lime into the 2024 edition of the International Residential Code. He was also the principal instigator and hemplime consultant for the first fully sprayed residence in the US-- (www.capecodhemphouse.com), in Harwich Port, MA.
He is a licensed architect in Massachusetts. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College and his Master of Architecture in Urban Design from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
