Request for Proposals

Want to help transform the built environment by putting your ideas in front of hundreds of professionals looking to improve their practices? Sara Bayer and Andrea Mancino, Conference Chairs for Building Energy NYC 2020 (Thursday, September 24), invite you to propose sessions in support of this year's conference theme: Carbon.

All practitioners who work in the built environment together have the opportunity to affect the cycle of an enormous quantity of energy and resources through their work. Given the urgency with which we must dramatically reduce carbon emissions, we are expanding the scope of BuildingEnergy NYC beyond operational performance to include the carbon impact of buildings throughout their entire life cycle. We therefore seek proposals focusing on all aspects of carbon-aware building practices and policies, as well as on the high-performance building innovations for which NESEA and BuildingEnergy conferences are known.

We've come a long way in figuring out how to make buildings operate at peak efficiency; let's now examine how these high-performing projects can operate effectively on a rapidly decarbonizing grid.

We are also interested in the following topics:

  • Examples of successful low-operational-energy buildings (and lessons learned along the way)
  • Retrofitting buildings for low operating energy
  • Workforce training of the skills required to create and maintain high-performing buildings
  • How to lower embodied energy in structural systems: concrete, steel, and wood
  • Byproducts of other industries for use in construction
  • Life cycle analysis
  • Policy and financial infrastructure
  • Electrification and being a good grid citizen
  • How to manage refrigerant in heat pump technology

If you would like to work on your proposal as a team before submitting, this document contains a list of the fields you will be asked to fill out once you are logged in to your nesea.org account.

Areas of Focus

NESEA’s mission is to advance the adoption of sustainable energy practices in the built environment by cultivating a community where practitioners share, collaborate and learn. We envision a built environment in the Northeast that is climate neutral, adaptive and resilient, energy independent, architecturally inspiring, and supportive of connection and community.

We seek proposals that support this mission and vision, within the following areas of focus:

  • Commercial
  • Institutional
  • Multifamily/High Rise
  • Single Family/Low Rise
  • Retrofit
  • New Construction
  • Design Process
  • Resiliency
  • Energy Production & Storage
  • Technology
  • Integrated Systems
  • Health & Comfort
  • Building Operations
  • Occupant Behavior & Engagement
  • Standards in Action (ex. LBC, NZE, Passive House)
  • Codes/Policy
  • Finance

About the Review Process

Proposals will be reviewed and vetted by a volunteer NESEA-Member content committee to ensure that conference sessions are data-driven, diverse, and genuinely useful to attendees. Successful proposals:

  • Feature sustainable and high-performance building practices, techniques, solutions, and/or governance.
  • Present innovative material and ideas.
  • Have rich data to support claims.
  • Avoid focusing on specific, proprietary products and/or services.
  • May describe learning from mistakes as well as from successes.
  • May offer a more interactive format beyond simply a lecture and/or slides.
  • May be designed for a specific audience and level of expertise.
  • Include diverse speakers and panelists.
  • Are comprehensive and complete upon submission.

Keep in Mind...

Please keep a few things in mind before you submit a proposal:
