Empowering NYC to Fight Climate Change and Thrive
Climate change presents New York City with significant challenges to adapt infrastructure, livelihoods and maintain a quality of life that makes it one of the great world capitals. And as New Yorkers, we face these challenges together: we breathe the same air, drink from the same water supply, and suffer the same impacts of hotter summers and bigger storms. To ensure we create a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient city, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio committed to reduce New York City’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% from 2005 levels by 2050 (80 x 50) - the level that the United Nations projects is necessary to avert the most disastrous impacts of climate change. Hear the Mayor's Office of Sustainability explain its integrated 80 x 50 Report, spanning buildings, energy supply, solid waste, and transportation networks - charting a course away from fossil fuels and toward a more vibrant future.
