High efficiency cooling and electric heating are critical to NYS and NYC climate goals, but air source heat pumps represent a small fraction of HVAC systems. This session will report on completed local projects with data on designs, costs and energy use compared to pre-retrofit baselines. We will report on intensive tenant engagement and key behavioral challenges and opportunities encountered, and provide feedback from building decision makers.

Most projects are fully occupied small (2-4 unit) multifamily buildings that were supported by NYSERDA. NYSERDA will present New York’s Renewable Heating and Cooling Policy Framework and provide an update on progress to date on air source heat pumps including launches of a new incentive and clean heating and cooling communities program.

The NYC Mayor’s Office of Sustainability will discuss initiatives to encourage air source heat pumps as part of an electrification strategy.  Lessons learned from these installations and policy implications for larger buildings will also be explored.
