Beyond Compliance: Risks and Rewards

The urgency of climate change demands bold action, innovation, and transformative leadership. In recent years, New York and the Northeast have led the country through groundbreaking changes to building codes, energy codes, and financial incentives to support climate adaptation across all sectors. Today, we have an opportunity to push our industry to achieve and even exceed these ambitious mandates. The 2024 BuildingEnergy NYC conference will be a chance to explore both the risks and rewards of moving Beyond Compliance.

At this year’s conference, we challenge you to share your experiences, successes, and setbacks with projects and programs that exceed the bare minimum and innovate on existing practices. We need to be thinking beyond compliance both in terms of scope (What else?) and time (What next?). This holistic approach encompasses the intersections of health, efficiency, resilience, and financial benefits, and prioritizes the needs of people while addressing the climate crisis.

Within the umbrella of our conference theme, we are specifically interested in proposals addressing:

  • Compliance Deadlines: Meeting LL97 and other regulatory mandates
  • Funding Sources and Financing: Exploring new and existing sources to foster sustainability initiatives and high-performance projects
  • Program Synergy: Integrating initiatives such as electrification and weatherization for enhanced impact and return on investment (ROI)
  • Technology & Reporting: Incorporating ESG and AI advancements, as well as other new technology
  • Risk Reduction & Scalability: Mitigating risk across systems, operations, and finances at scale
  • Workforce Training & Development: Cultivating a skilled and diverse workforce
  • Equity, Health, Comfort, and Resilience: Emphasizing occupant well-being and risk reduction

About the Review Process

BuildingEnergy NYC will take place on October 24, 2024. The deadline to submit your conference session proposal is Monday, April 29 at midnight. Please use this planning sheet to prepare your proposal before submitting.

Proposals will be reviewed and vetted by a volunteer committee of NESEA members to ensure that conference sessions are data-driven, diverse, and genuinely useful to attendees. Successful proposals:

  • Feature sustainable and high-performance building practices, solutions, or governance.
  • Present innovative material and ideas.
  • Have rich data to support claims.
  • Avoid focusing on specific, proprietary products or services.
  • Describe learning from mistakes as well as from successes.
  • Are designed to actively engage attendees in dialogue.
  • Include diverse speakers and panelists.
  • Are comprehensive and complete upon submission.

You must log in or create an account at nesea.org to create a proposal (membership is not required). This allows you to save your proposal as a draft and come back to work on it as often as you like before submitting. NESEA does not provide compensation or reimburse expenses for speakers.
